Black Box Thinking
Matthew Syed ISBN 978-1-47361-380-5
Using the words of Dave Brailsford from team Sky cycling this is “an extraordinary, inspirational book which reveals how great performers and teams are driven by an insatiable curiosity for marginal gains. Together with the intellectual courage to challenge their most cherished assumptions.” This book inspired me to keep going regardless of how long or how many attempts it takes to learn a new skill. Now failing does not matter but provides an opportunity to learn.
The Inner Game of Golf
W. Timothy Gallwey ISBN 978-1-4472-8848-0
Although the Inner Game has been around since the 1970s the principals for use as a tool for our sports psychology is still highly relevant today. If you ignore the aspects about golf but begin to realise that in all sport we create self doubt/ fear. This self doubt Gallwey shows, and from experience I agree, limits our performance. There are many ways this happens but mainly by producing tightness, overthinking and a reliance on our conscious instead of our subconscious (feel). Therefore if we can remove or control the doubt (The Inner Game) our performance will improve. Great for a complex skill like rolling. Give it a go and control your Inner game. Enjoy.

438 Days
Jonathan Franklin ISBN 978-1-5098-0017-9
This great read is an epic tale of one man’s determination to survive at sea in his fishing boat for 438 days. A real page turner full of thrills but between the lines you get the real struggle and courage of one man wanting to get home. Amazing grit, impressive stuff. Enjoy. “On the 17 November 2012, Salvador Alvarenga left the coast of Mexico for a 2 day fishing trip. A viscious storm killed his engine and the current dragged his boat out to sea….Alvarenga would not touch solid ground again for 14 months (438 Days). When he was washed ashore on 30 January 2014, he had drifted over 6,000 miles”.
